Wesley developed his theology using what is known as the Wesleyan Quadrilateral.

-
Scripture: The Bible was the sole and final source of theological understanding, though he was also well-read in other areas.

-
Tradition: Christian tradition (especially the early church creeds) was considered important, but only as long as it was in keeping with scripture.

-
Reason: Reason was seen as a tool to help understand God's will, but it was subservient to faith.

-
Experience: Personal experience, particularly the inner witness of the Spirit, was crucial for understanding and living out one's faith.
